Garden Furniture It was here in 1709 that Iron Master Abraham Darby succeeded in smelting good quality iron by using coke rather than charcoal. This process was a major breakthrough for the beginning of the modern industrial age. By the 1830s, another dimension to iron casting was introduced by Francis Darby. Francis had a great love of art and under his guidance, the foundry started to produce ornamental castings, from hallstands, chairs and benches, to larger projects such as the `Hyde Park` gates and railings. Many of these pieces were exhibited at the Great Exhibition 1851, with one of the most enduring patterns in this collection being, the `Nasturtium` seats and benches. Now, 200 years later, Coalbrookdale is producing the `Nasturtium` cast iron garden furniture, classical designs from the original patterns using traditional hand crafted and casting techniques. The result is beautiful garden furniture in exquisite designs that are extremely collectable in their own right, authenticated by the Iron Bridge Gorge Museum |
